One of the questions I regularly receive from clients, especially from men visiting Amsterdam for business or a special weekend away, is which hotel I would recommend for a meeting. Amsterdam is home to many beautiful hotels, but over the years there are a few places that I find myself returning to again and again.
For me, what makes a hotel truly special goes beyond luxury alone. Of course, I appreciate a beautiful room, a comfortable bed, and excellent service, but the overall experience matters just as much. The atmosphere, the location, the way guests are welcomed, and the feeling a hotel creates are often what leave the strongest impression.
While Amsterdam offers many wonderful places to stay, the following four hotels are undoubtedly among my favourites.
W Amsterdam
If you are looking for a hotel with a modern, international, and vibrant atmosphere, W Amsterdam is an excellent choice. Located in the heart of the city, it offers everything you would expect from a luxury city hotel while maintaining a contemporary and energetic character.
What I personally enjoy about the W is the balance between luxury and a relaxed atmosphere. Some five-star hotels can feel overly formal, whereas the W feels stylish and welcoming at the same time. The hotel attracts an international crowd, and there is always a sense of energy that perfectly reflects the spirit of Amsterdam. One of my favourite parts of the hotel is undoubtedly the rooftop bar. The view across the city remains impressive no matter how many times you visit. It is a wonderful place to enjoy a cocktail together and ease into the evening.
Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam
While the W Amsterdam is vibrant and lively, the Waldorf Astoria offers an entirely different experience—one of tranquillity, elegance, and refinement. Situated along the beautiful Herengracht canal, this hotel feels like a hidden sanctuary in the middle of the city. The moment you step inside, the busy streets of Amsterdam seem to disappear. Everything about the hotel radiates calm sophistication without ever feeling excessive or intimidating.
What I particularly appreciate about the Waldorf Astoria is its attention to detail. The service is exceptional, and the historic canal houses that make up the property give it a unique charm and character. The hotel feels exclusive without being pretentious. For clients looking for a discreet, peaceful, and luxurious environment, it remains one of the finest choices Amsterdam has to offer.
Pulitzer Amsterdam
The Pulitzer may be the hotel that feels most distinctly Amsterdam to me. The hotel consists of a collection of interconnected historic canal houses, creating an experience that feels very different from staying in a traditional hotel building. Every corridor, room, and common area has its own personality, giving the Pulitzer a warm and almost home-like atmosphere.
What I love most about the Pulitzer is the way it combines history and comfort. You can feel the city’s heritage all around you while still enjoying the luxury and convenience expected from a five-star hotel. Rather than impressing through grandeur, the Pulitzer wins people over through its charm and character. That makes it feel more personal and intimate than many other luxury hotels.
Hotel Okura Amsterdam
Hotel Okura has long been regarded as one of Amsterdam’s finest hotels, and for good reason. What always stands out to me about Okura is the sense of calm it provides. Although it is located close to the city centre, it often feels like a peaceful retreat away from the busiest parts of Amsterdam. The spacious rooms, exceptional service, and relaxed atmosphere make it a place I genuinely enjoy returning to.
Okura is also renowned for its outstanding culinary offerings. For those who appreciate fine dining, the hotel is a destination in its own right. The high level of service is noticeable throughout the property and contributes to a consistently comfortable and refined experience. The combination of Japanese hospitality, modern luxury, and beautiful views over Amsterdam makes Hotel Okura one of the most complete hotel experiences the city has to offer.
Which One Would I Choose?
The answer depends entirely on what you are looking for. If you enjoy a modern and lively atmosphere, W Amsterdam is likely the perfect choice. If you prefer peace, elegance, and understated luxury, the Waldorf Astoria is difficult to surpass. For those who love the charm and history of Amsterdam itself, the Pulitzer is a beautiful option. And if exceptional service, fine dining, and comfort are your priorities, Hotel Okura is an outstanding choice.
Amsterdam is home to many wonderful hotels, but these are the places where I have created some of my fondest memories and where I always look forward to returning.
With love,
Rosa
